Return to Applause! 2014 - 2015

Applause! is the monthly recognition of significant achievements and contributions by staff, students and community partners at a York Region District School Board Public Board Meeting.

Recognition of achievements is based on alignment with the organizational goals outlined by the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan in combination with the criteria set out in Staff Awards and Student Awards policies.

The Ontario Teachers' Insurance Plan Teaching Award Finalist

The Ontario Teachers' Insurance Plan (OTIP) has announced the recipients of their awards recognizing and celebrating teaching excellence for 2014. Thousands of teachers from all across Ontario who are new to teaching were nominated for consideration.

Justin Hui, a passionate and talented Grade 2 teacher at Mount Joy Public School, was named as one of only five finalists and was awarded a certificate of Honourable Mention in the Beginning Teacher Category.

This recognition has served to further fuel Justin's passion for providing students with rich and meaningful opportunities to engage in their learning and to inspire and develop their diverse talents. From his innovative programming in the classroom, to his collaboration with colleagues, to his leadership in extracurricular and community activities, to his commitment to life-long learning, Justin is proof that the future of our system is in excellent hands.

Vaughan Public Libraries’ Early Harvest Competition

Hundreds of teens entered the 25th annual Early Harvest competition. Early Harvest is Vaughan Public Libraries’ annual flagship event which provides youth in the City of Vaughan with an opportunity to enhance their artistic abilities and cultural experiences.

Since 1989, the Early Harvest Competition has fostered and celebrated diversity, originality, and initiative among teen artists in the City of Vaughan. The competition provides teenagers, ages 12 to 18, with a forum to produce innovative works of art, while connecting with their peers and the community. All winning entries are published in the Early Harvest magazine and made available to the public.

Three teachers from Vaughan Secondary School nominated Sofia for this award - Violet Papanikolaou, Dina Maniatis and Luan Canaj:
Sofia has been instrumental in helping us implement the French Immersion program at Vaughan Secondary School. She has continually and selflessly provided us with ideas, resources and advice. No matter how busy Sofia gets, she is always willing to help us in any way. We can always rely on her. She has been instrumental in making the task of implementing a four-year French Immersion program a positive experience for us. She provides us with support, encourages us continually, and generously shares her knowledge.
