World War I Centenary
World War I Centenary
Voices from the WarThe events of World War I impacted people on every continent and were critical to the development of Canada as a nation.

The centenary provides an opportunity to reflect on our individual and shared histories.  It broadens our understanding of this stage in Canadian history and the impact locally on York Region.

Throughout the centenary, students will be able to take part in events and activities that will allow them to both create and share innovative projects that depict the multiple voices of Canadian and global history.

Vimy Ridge Field Trip

High school students can take part in a field trip to Vimy, France in the spring of 2017. Interested students need to begin their planning this year.

In partnership with EF Educational Tours and the Vimy Foundation, YRDSB high schools have the opportunity to travel to England and France to participate in the commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge.  The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a pivotal event of WWI and also stands as an important event in our national heritage.  Our students will serve as ambassadors, representing Canada, in honouring all who served. Please contact your principal if interested.

We encourage students to take part in these and future WWI centenary events. In doing so, they will learn multiple perspectives of the past that will help foster a more inclusive future.
