Each year we share the progress we’ve made as a Board towards meeting our shared goals. We also highlight the important work of staff and the accomplishments of our students that reflect the entire YRDSB community’s commitment to inspire learning.

The 2019-20 school year was affected by several local and international events. COVID-19, labour issues and calls for social justice greatly influenced our staff, students and families alike.

In March, due to the school closures that resulted from COVID-19, our system underwent a major pivot in how we deliver programming to students. Our staff implemented a Learning and Caring Plan to keep students engaged in learning and to fully support our teachers’ work to maintain student engagement. Staff went to great lengths to provide technology and internet access to families to ensure continuity of learning for all students. Our community came together to face these challenges and I am proud of the resiliency, professionalism and courage that was demonstrated throughout the closure.

As we worked through these issues, we continued to move forward in our work on the priorities of the Trustees’ 2018-2022 Multi-Year Strategic Plan. The Multi-Year Strategic Plan prioritizes well-being and mental health; championing equity and inclusivity; building collaborative relationships; and empowering ethical leadership. Significant progress was made in these areas in 2019-20.

I look forward to continuing our work with the Board of Trustees in supporting these priority areas. To support these priorities, we have aligned the goals in the Director’s Action Plan with the strategic plan and our Board’s Mission, Vision and Values. I encourage you to read our plans and the rest of our annual report to learn more about this important work.
