Associate Director of Education, Schools & Programs Selection Process
A unique opportunity for a collaborative, transformational leader who is open to new ideas, builds trust and respect, and actively seeks staff contributions and perspectives in order to champion the Board’s renewed commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and human rights in an environment of transparency, integrity, trust and resolve.
York Region District School Board (YRDSB) is the third largest school district in Ontario, with over 127,000 students in 180 elementary schools and 33 secondary schools, and a mission “to advance student achievement and well-being through public education, which motivates learners, fosters inclusion, inspires innovation and builds community”. York Region students consistently perform above average in provincial testing, making the Board one of the top achievers in the province. YRDSB attributes this success to a unique combination of students who are motivated to succeed; teachers who are skilled at helping students learn; strong educational leaders who share a common vision of excellence; and the participation of a supportive community and parents that understand the importance of quality public education.
With a renewed commitment to inclusion and equity, and to live its mission, vision and values, the Board is seeking a visionary, collaborative and action-oriented Associate Director of Education, Schools and Programs who sees this role as a great opportunity to join a team building an exciting future for the YRDSB – a financially strong, growing school board within a rapidly growing region that is proud of its richly diverse population and its reputation as a wonderful place in which to live and work.
Operating confidently and collaboratively within a system that is both challenging and innovative, bold, forward-thinking and open to change, you’ll lead by example in focusing on the parent and community experience, putting students first, supporting families, fostering productive relationships, and ensuring that school Principals and Superintendents have the timely information they need to make sound decisions. As Associate Director, you’ll build instructional coherence and serve schools by leveraging existing strengths across the Board while effectively addressing issues and special needs, inside the school and beyond, modelling ethical leadership, welcoming feedback from students and parents, and generally promoting a shared commitment to the Board’s values and to finding new ways to change the system so it can better serve students in times of change.
Your success as Associate Director of Education, Schools and Programs will depend in large part on your ability strongly connect with people, recognize what is working and boldly address or change what is not. You will be highly visible and directly connected to those you serve.  You will be successful by engaging people’s talents and supporting the Board of Trustees and the Director as they work together to define and achieve the system’s strategic priorities.
A proactive leader with demonstrated intelligence, integrity and initiative, and a solid understanding of the classroom experience and realities for students and teachers, you know how to identify and incorporate future trends and opportunities in your work, decisions and advice, and work with parents to engage them and inspire confidence. While a wide variety of experience –elementary and secondary – is preferable, what is most important is your proven track record of success in leading change with and through people, and your ability to keep things in perspective, value the opinions of others, and gain the trust, respect and buy-in of your peers, leadership, staff and the community at large.
An Ontario Supervisory Officer’s Certificate, a master’s degree and demonstrated outstanding service as a Superintendent are required, along with a demonstrated strong equity background embracing all the different opportunities that arise from feedback on Equity and Human Rights.
