YRDSB Students Place Third in Climate Hack-to-Action
Aurora, ON – A team of six students from Richmond Green Secondary School placed third in a climate change hack-to-action hosted by the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship and the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change this weekend. A pilot experience for students, Team RG Green was the only group comprised entirely of secondary students to compete in the Climate Hack-to-Action.

The event brought together professionals from a variety of fields at the DMZ, Ryerson University to develop creative solutions to inspire individuals to reduce their carbon footprints. York Region District School Board students won third prize for their idea CarbonConquest, an app that uses a gaming element to teach young people about how their choices impact their carbon imprint. Another six YRDSB students worked as members of adult teams to propose other innovative solutions.

“Our Board is proud to see students working together to promote positive change through sharing their innovative ideas,” said Anna DeBartolo, Chair of the York Region District School Board. “We are grateful to staff, parents and community partners for their continued support and congratulate Arman, Endi, Uthman, Derek, Yalda and Mershab on their achievement.”

“York Region District School Board is committed to empowering students through modern learning,” said J. Philip Parappally, Director of Education, YRDSB. “We look forward to continuing to work with our community partners to create additional opportunities for students to engage in authentic inquiry connected to their interests and strengths.”

All of the students had the opportunity to work with mentors and to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges representing a range of sectors, including government, not-for-profit and business.

Team RG Green won $1,000 and a networking luncheon with the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

York Region District School Board is the third largest school district in Ontario with over 123,000 students in 174 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools.
