Aquatic Leadership Program Policies

Policies, Procedures and Protocols for the Online Component

All students registered in the YRDSB Aquatic Leadership Program are expected to follow YRDSB policies and procedures as well as the City of Markham, the Town of Aurora and the City of Vaughan.

Assistance: For assistance with a course question send an e-mail to your teacher. Make sure your Help Request includes your name, telephone number where you can be reached and the best time to reach you. You can e-mail general queries to: aquaticleadership@yrdsb.ca.

Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students are expected to read the plagiarism guidelines.

Assessment and Evaluation: Assignments and tests are to be submitted in a timely fashion. Teachers will provide feedback in a timely manner. Comments indicating strengths and areas in need of improvement will be included in the feedback. Details about the evaluation policy for a specific course will be given by the teacher.

Attendance: 100% attendance is strongly recommended as aquatic certifications have a minimum hour participation requirement.  If a student is ill or absent from the program, they must inform the teacher. Fees paid for the aquatic courses and materials will not be refunded.

Board Policies and Procedures: All Board policies and their related procedures, where applicable, are available on our Board Website or in school offices.

Class Participation: Students will be asked to participate in group discussions in an online chat, threaded discussions in a virtual classroom setting, and activities or assignments related to the Health and Physical Education curriculum expectations for PAQ2O and PLF4M that are not covered through the Life Saving Society course expectations. Discussion and online classroom areas will be monitored by the teacher.

Communication: Constant communication between teacher and student is essential for success in a course. In addition to ongoing e-mail communication, teachers will make themselves available to students for help during a specific time identified as “office hours”. If the teacher is ill or absent, a message will be posted which will open automatically for students informing them of the situation. Students will also receive regular telephone calls or messages from the teacher in order to help the student be successful with the program.

Course Withdrawal: To withdraw (cancel) from the YRDSB Aquatic Leadership Program, the student must send an e-mail to the teacher and to aquaticleadership@yrdsb.ca . All borrowed materials must be returned before the cancellation will be processed. Failure to officially cancel from a course will result in a mark being posted on the transcript. The mark will be the average of all work, including zeros for work not submitted up to and including the final exam.

Exams: All students must write face-to-face exams. An examiner from the Lifesaving Society will evaluate the aquatic skills required for swim and instructor certifications. Students must pass the in-water examinations in order to receive their instructor and lifeguarding qualifications. All exams will be supervised by Aquatic Leadership Program teacher.

Full Disclosure Policy: A mark will be posted on the Ontario Student Transcript for all students who are registered in a grade 11 or 12 course five days after the date of the Mid-semester report.
