Steps to Follow (after acceptance)

Once the student application has been accepted, there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled before arriving in Canada.

Secondary Students

  1. Submit one copy of the Letter of Acceptance to the Immigration Section of the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission to apply for a Study Permit. Please keep the second copy for arrival in Canada.

    It is mandatory for each student entering secondary school (grade 9-12) to register and complete the English test availalbe in the Pre-Arrival Learning Program (PAL). The PAL program has multiple features; it assesses English proficiency, provides tutorials to increase use of English and vocabulary, and includes an orientation to the school board and the Homestay program.​ If the invitation to sign-up for PAL has not been received by the time the Letter of Acceptance is issued, please email the student's name, date of birth, and assigned school to international.education@yrdsb
     
  2. Once​ the Study Permit approval letter has been issued from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), book a flight to Canada.

  3. Plan to arrive prior to the start of orientation which begins two weeks before the start of the semester (mid August for September, Semester 1, mid January for February, Semester 2). More information will be forthcoming.

    The latest date students may arrive is 
    September 15 if starting school in September OR February 15 if starting school in February. If arrival is after these dates, enrollment will be deferred to the next semester. The school start date is indicated on the Letter of Acceptance.

    NOTE: If YRDSB Homestay & Custodianship has been arranged, the earliest homestay move-in date for each new semester is: 
    August 15 (September semester) OR January 15 (February semester). 

  4. After booking a flight, fax or email the completed Arrival Confirmation Form​ to admissions@yrdsb.ca

  Elementary Student

  1. Submit one copy of the Letter of Acceptance to the Immigration Section of the nearest Canadian Embassy, Consulate or High Commission to apply for a Study Permit. Please keep the second copy for arrival in Canada.

  2. Once the Study Permit approval letter has been issued from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), book a flight to Canada.

    Students must arrive before  September 15 if starting school in September  (Term 1) OR February 15 if starting school in February (Term 2). The school start date is indicated on the Letter of Acceptance.

  3. A​fter booking your flight, fax or email the completed Arrival Confirmation Form to admissions@yrdsb.ca​​

  4. Contact the Reception Centre​ (905-918-0080 or 1-888-811-0229) to book an appointment for an educational assessment.​ It is recommended that the student arrives in Canada at least one week prior to the start of the program.

PAL (Pre-arrival Learning Program) is an online program available to all new international secondary students.
