New and Replacement Schools

The following New and Replacement Schools have been approved by the Ministry of Education. 

New Schools​

For information regarding new school projects submitted to the Ministry of Education for funding approval, please review the Capital Strategy​ project list. Once new projects have been approved, the approved project name and details will be published. ​

Aurora 2C Elementary Sch​​ool

In July 2020, the Ministry of Education approved funding to build a new school in northeast Aurora. The new elementary school is proposed to open September 2023. School opening date is subject to timing of municipal and ministry approvals through the construction process.

Kleinburg/Nashville Elementary Sch​​ool

In October 2020, the Ministry of Education approved funding to build a new school in Kleinburg/Nashville. The new elementary school is proposed to open September 2023. School opening date is subject to timing of municipal and ministry approvals through the construction process.

Sharon Public Sch​​ool (Replacement/New School)

In October 2020, the Ministry of Education approved funding to build a new school in Sharon. The new elementary school is proposed to open September 2023. School opening date is subject to timing of municipal and ministry approvals through the construction process.

Stouffville Elementary Sch​​ool

In October 2020, the Ministry of Education approved funding to build a new school in Stouffville. The new elementary school is proposed to open September 2023. School opening date is subject to timing of municipal and ministry approvals through the construction process.

Replacement Schools

E.J. Sand Public Sch​​ool

In 2015, the Ministry of Education approved funding to replace E. J. Sand Public School. During construction of the new facility, students will be bussed and held at the former Holy Family Catholic Elementary School located at 21 Mullen Drive in Thornhill.

The new E. J. Sand Public School is proposed to open September 2022.

Community Letter​ - New School Update (June 8, 2020)

Dr. G.W. Williams Secon​dary School

In 2018, the Ministry of Education approved funding to replace Dr. G. W. Williams Secondary School.  The Dr. G. W. Williams Secondary School will be relocated to a Board owned site located east of Bayview Avenue between Borealis Avenue and Spring Farm Road. 

The new Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School is proposed to open September 2024.

For further information regarding future schools listed on the Capital Strategy Project List or school sites in your community, please contact: planning.services@yrdsb.ca

On an annual basis, the Planning and Property Services Department of the York Region District School Board reviews student accommodation concerns across the Board.

As part of that process, a long term accommodation plan is created (known as the Capital Strategy) which identifies new schools, additions to schools and replacement school requirements. Please visit the Capital Strategy page for more information on projects that have been submitted to the Ministry of Education for review and funding.
