With the Ontario provincial election just a few weeks away on June 7, the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association (OPSBA) has declared May 23 Education Day in Ontario.

The provincial government is responsible for education in Ontario. They decide what is taught in our schools and how tax dollars are allocated to education. In the 2018-19 provincial budget, education sector spending accounted for almost one-fifth of the province’s total budget.

With this in mind, it is important that voters know where local candidates and their parties stand on public education. We need to ensure we are making informed decisions about the future of education in our province.

While most of our students cannot vote in the election, a provincial election provides a great opportunity to educate young people about the importance of civic engagement and to find ways to engage them in the democratic process.

A number of our schools are participating in the Student Vote program, learning more about the process and the issues, and casting their own ballots for local representatives. Elections Ontario also provides information for voters as well as for young people looking to learn more about elections.

As Ontarians, this is our opportunity to have our say about the future of our province.
