10 Ways to Encourage Summer Learning Secondary

Summer is a great time for students to rest and recharge, but studies have shown that a month’s worth of knowledge can be lost over the summer. Find the right balance by checking out a few tips for keeping learning alive!

  1. Help your child put together a budget.  Have them do research, track revenues and expenses and teach them how to reconcile their accounts.
  2. If your child is interested in sports, encourage them to collect player statistics and track game results.
  3. Encourage teens to assist a younger sibling, a neighbor or a family friend with reading.
  4. While visiting another city, pick up brochures; encourage children to learn about the city’s history and culture.
  5. Encourage your child to take a class. The YRDSB offers a variety of summer learning programs.
  6. Check out summer programs at museums, libraries, art galleries, science centres or a local zoo.
  7. Promote volunteering! Suggest visiting a hospital, animal shelter, community centre, summer camp, daycare, nursing home, etc.
  8. Help your teen understand what is needed to gain employment, such as a resume and cover letter, filling out a job application and interview skills.
  9. Suggest looking for a summer job doing yard work for neighbors, babysitting, washing cars, house sitting, etc.
  10. Recommend reading newspapers or magazines (in print or online) – it is a great way to build vocabulary and stay informed about important current and world events.
