Family Studies Department 105
Family Studies Department

Family Studies is an interdisciplinary subject area that integrates the social sciences and human ecology to look at all aspects of daily life from different perspectives.  It includes the study of individual and family development, healthy relationships, raising healthy children (parenting), decision-making, resource management, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, housing, health sciences, and gender studies.
Courses in Family Studies allow students to develop critical and creative thinking skills as well as practical skills and understanding to use later on in their lives.  Hands-on experience plays a key role in Family Studies at HHSS through the participation of food labs, sewing labs, group projects, observation of children, working with those who have special needs, as well as the “Baby Think It Over” infant simulator.
