Career Cruising

Geography of Canada (CGC1D1)
Grade 9, Academic

This course explores Canada's distinct and changing character and the geographic systems and relationships that shape it. Students will investigate the interactions of natural and human systems within Canada, as well as Canada's economic, cultural, and environmental connections to other countries. Students will use a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods to analyze and evaluate geographic issues and present their findings.
Prerequisite: None

Geography of Canada (CGC1P1)
Grade 9, Applied

This course focuses on geographic issues that affect Canadians today. Students will draw on personal and everyday experiences to learn about Canada's distinct and changing character and the natural and human systems and global influences that shape the country. Students will use a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods to examine practical geographic questions and communicate their findings.
Prerequisite: None

Geography of Canada (Essential) (CGC1PM)
Grade 9, Applied

This Grade 9 course is designed to meet the needs of students whose reading and writing skills require particular attention in a small class setting. Students will learn about the geography of Canada and how Canada is part of the world community. Students will understand the physical diversity and character of Canada by examining the links among landforms, climate, soils, plants, animals and human activities. This is a locally developed course and students must be recommended for it. Further information is available from the Special Education Department Head.

Physical Geography - Natural Hazards & Disasters (CGF3M1)
Grade 11, University/College

This course examines elements of the physical environment, through the processes that shape them, and the relationship between the hazardous environment and human beings. By studying natural hazards and disasters, students will become familiar with human-environment interactions as well as Earth's most violent and catastrophic natural events and how these mold the dynamic Earth we live in today. Students will apply a wide range of geographic tools and methods to explore the distribution and ongoing evolution of the elements of the physical environment on a variety of scales, from local to global.
Prerequisite: CGC1D1 or CGC1P1

Travel and Tourism: A Regional Geographic Perspective (CGG3O1)
Grade 11, Open

This course focuses on travel and tourism as a vehicle for studying selected world regions. Using a variety of geotechnologies and inquiry and communication methods, students will conduct and present case studies that develop their understanding of the unique characteristics of selected world regions; the environmental, cultural, economic, and political factors that influence travel and tourism; and the impact of the travel industry on communities and environments around the world.
Prerequisite: CGC1D1 or CGC1P1

Canadian and World Issues: A Geographic Analysis (CGW4U1)
Grade 12, University

This course examines the global challenges of creating a sustainable and equitable future, focusing on current issues that illustrate these challenges. Students will investigate a range of topics, including cultural, economic, and geopolitical relationships, regional disparities in the ability to meet basic human needs, and protection of the natural environment. Students will use geotechnologies and skills of geographic inquiry and analysis to develop and communicate balanced opinions about the complex issues facing Canada and a world that is interdependent and constantly changing.
Prerequisite: Any U or M course in Canadian World Studies, English or Social Sciences and Humanities 


Canadian and World Issues: A Geographic Analysis (CGW4C1)

Grade 12, College

This course explores many difficult challenges facing Canada and the world today - challenges such as unequal access to food, water, and energy; urbanization; globalization; and meeting the needs of a growing world population while ensuring the sustainability of the natural environment. Students will explore these and other world issues from environmental, social, economic, and political perspectives, while applying the concepts of geographic thinking, the geographic inquiry process, and spatial technologies to guide and support their investigations.

Prerequisite: Issues in Canadian Geography, Grade 9, Academic or Applied​
