Beaumont-Hamel MAA
In my Canadian History course, I was never taught about the Beaumont-Hamel battle. I was not expecting a glorious story like Vimy Ridge or Juno Beach when we arrived at the battle site on my tour. I thought that the Newfoundland Regiment's history at this site wasn't significant in my view of Canadian History. I was completely wrong.

Newfoundland Regiment War Memorial at Beaumont-Hamel

Beaumont-Hamel is a story of the Newfoundland Regiment in World War I and their extraordinary battle. Although this battle is remembered with frightening statistics of loss, it's also remembered for the ultimate bravery, perseverance and nationalism shown by the soldiers.

This Battle isn't taught in the Ontario Grade 10 curriculum because Newfoundland had not yet become part of Canada by WWI. Newfoundland fought under the British forces. Even as someone from another province of Canada,
I believe this battle displays what it means to be Canadian.

CBC News has a great video resource of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel created for the 100th Anniversary in 2016.
