English as a Second Language

The ESL program is offered to assist students with their integration into Ontario schools.  ESL courses assist students whose first language is not English to learn the language of instruction.  The ESL program provides students with the opportunity to develop their English language skills in an environment that respects and values their linguistic and cultural traditions while encouraging participation in their new school and community.  It is designed to enable students to learn the English language in a supportive, academic environment.  Students will develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Five language credit courses in ESL are offered at Newmarket High School.  Students will be placed in the program according to their English language proficiency and their academic needs.  Placement will be determined by an individual language assessment by the YRDSB Reception Centre and/or the Newmarket High School ESL designate. Where appropriate, the recommendation provided by the student’s elementary school ESL designate will also assist in determining placement.
