Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

Page Content
The 2011/2012 school year was momentous as we opened the doors to our new school for the first time. It was exciting as we focused on creating a community of learners and building a strong sense of community. Together we are building our foundation and throughout the year, we experienced many firsts, including athletic activities sporting our Panthers jerseys, Tribes assemblies, and the Annie production. We fondly remember our official school opening ceremony, the visit from the Berton family and our spring concert. These experiences, when woven together, created the first chapter of our Pierre Berton story.
As a community, we worked together to create a touchstone to inspire us towards positive decisions each and every day at Pierre Berton Public School. The creation of this touchstone was purposefully planned to consider input from all stakeholders including students, staff, and parents of our community. Members of our Student Leadership Team had the careful task of finding common ideas and themes when creating our touchstone which adorns the walls of our school entrance, our gym, and our classrooms.
During the 2011-2012 school year, were engaged in numerous learning opportunities designed to develop critical thinking skills and enable them to apply knowledge to new and varied learning situations. These skills will support our students in all of their future learning endeavours. Leadership abilities have been developed through participation on various student committees, including the Student Leadership Team, EcoTeam, and Tribes. We had a very active Student Leadership Team who worked hard to develop a positive climate for learning. Our students demonstrated initiative, empathy and responsibility by seeking out opportunities to support others by raising funds for cancer research and to support children with autism. Students also worked as a school community to highlight our focus on environmental responsibility. Our students are to be commended for their hard work throughout the year.
As a school, we have also become united through learning and singing our school song which has left a page in our history at Pierre Berton Public School.
