Take Our Kids to Work Day

Take Our Kids to Work” 2020 (TOKW 2020) is a National initiative that provides grade 9 students with the opportunity  to OBSERVE a work e​​nvironment or ENGAGE in pathways planning for one day.  As suggested by the Premier’s Highly Skilled Workforce Expert Panel Report, the program will support students to begin planning their future career path by helping them better understand the world of work.  


Due to COVID restrictions, on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., grade 9 students will take part in virtual activities that will support them with pathways planning. The TOKW opportunity will provide new, dynamic and engaging experiences delivered virtually by the Learning Partnership and the Pathways Team, Curriculum and Instructional Services.


TOKW Opportunities for Grade 9 Students on November 4, 2020 

From 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.


Option 1:

Students participate in a virtual Job Shadow with parent/guardian, family member/neighbour  etc.  


or


Option 2:

Students participate in a Live Stream event from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.hosted by the Pathways Team, Curriculum and Instructional Services, in partnership with the Learning Partnership. 


The grade 9 students tha​t select Option 2 will follow this schedule:


12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Student launch for  Take Our Kids to Work 

Your Future, Now is an inspiring, 20-minute pre-recorded event that is a great way to kick off the day! Hear from a range of workplaces and professionals who will share messages of hope and resilience and bring to life the real-world skills that have led to their success.


1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Skilled Trades 

The fourth industrial revolution is upon us and skilled tradespeople have never been more in demand! In this myth-busting, awareness-raising session, you’ll be introduced to the skills, training pathways and exciting career options available in the skilled trades.



1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. - Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Unleash your inner innovator! Young entrepreneurs and inventors from across Canada share the secrets of their success in a panel discussion moderated by an award-winning graduate of The Learning Partnership’s Investigate! Invent! Innovate! program.

2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. - Healthcare

Take a virtual tour of one of Canada’s top hospitals and learn about the vital role technology and teamwork play in helping healthcare professionals care for people!


2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Technology and Finance

See how RBC is becoming the digitally-enabled bank of the future through innovation and new technology! Join RBC as they lift the curtain on technology at the bank and see how they are preparing youth for the future of work.


3:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. - Pathway Planning Activity using ‘My Pathway Planner”

Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning and experiences with Take Our Kids to Work 2020, using My Pathway Planner by creating a portfolio for Take Our Kids to Work 2020.

Students participating in Option 2 will receive an invitation through their GAPPS account which will include a link to:

  • the event via the permission form 

  • the guides that will support their reflections throughout the afternoon

  • a google form to send in their pathways questions ahead of the session

  • a live chat where they can pose questions throughout the afternoon

Take Our Ki​ds to Work Day

Students benefit because - it’s an opportunity for them to explore career options, through:
  • Understanding the importance of staying in school by learning first-hand what skills are required in today’s workplace
  • Thinking about what aspects of their “work day” they liked and what they didn’t
  • Exploring career options in a practical way and gain a better understanding of just how many career choices are open to them
  • By spending a day in the life of a working adult, they develop an appreciation of their parents’ work and motivations

Parents benefit because  - it helps them prepare their children for the future by:

  • Discussing work experiences with their child
  • Beginning a career discussion based on actual experiences
  • Enriching their child’s experience with discussions before, during and after the workplace visit
