Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

Page Content Courses Offered at Thornlea Secondary School by the Special Education Department:
This course investigates learning strategies and assists students to become better, more independent leaners while developing their personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts. Students learn how to develop and apply a range of strategies to improve their learning and achievement, particularly their literacy, communication and planning skills. This course will increase students' confidence, motivation, and ability to learn. Please note the curriculum may be revised to accommodate the needs of the learners.

This course focuses on learning strategies to help students become better, more independent learners. Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy skills, personal management skills, and interpersonal teamwork skills to improve their learning and achievement in school, the workplace, and the community. This course helps students build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond. |
This course is designed to help students strengthen essential reading and writing skills, providing them with the extra literacy support they need in order to graduate. Students will read informational, graphic, and literary texts, with a focus on locating information, identifying main ideas and supporting details, building vocabulary, and consolidating skills in the application of key comprehension strategies. This course will also help students develop core learning strategies. |
This course explores learning strategies and helps students become better, more independent learners while increasing their self-advocacy, communication and personal management skills, both in school and in other contexts. Students will learn how to develop and apply a range of strategies to improve their learning and achievement, particularly for the OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test), a mandatory requirement for an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). This course will increase students' confidence, motivation and ability to learn. Please note the curriculum may be revised to accommodate the needs of the learners. |

This course will be reinforcing learning strategies acquired in Grades 9 and 10, including self-advocacy, communication and personal management skills. Our focus this term is for our students to develop more as independent learners, increasing their emotional awareness, developing maturity and independence in order to achieve their full potential academically. Students will gain awareness of the steps and actions needed to attain a future where they will not only be successful, but also interested and engaged. They will critique their academic standing to date, and assess current and future achievements. Students will partake in a variety of assignments, projects, and tests with ongoing monitoring of progress through the use of differentiated assessment designs, to ensure their success. Students will begin to investigate possible routes for their future, increasing confidence, motivation, and ability for transition to post-secondary. Please note the curriculum may be revised to accommodate the needs of the learners. |
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding and acceptance of their learning needs. It aims to help students become independent, lifelong, and successful learners by improving their learning skills and preparing them to make successful transitions to work and postsecondary education. Students will learn how to assess their learning abilities and use critical reading, time management, and other techniques for promoting effective learning. In addition, they will investigate learning requirements for employment and postsecondary education or training and develop plans for learning after secondary school. |
