Pop superstar Celine Marie Claudette Dion, b. Charlemagne, Quebec, Mar. 30, 1968, dominated the record charts in the late 1990s and into the 21st century. She possesses a powerful voice and appears to give her all as she sings in lightly French-accented English. Dion began her career as a teen singing in French (her native language) and had hits in Canada and France. She recorded her first English-language album, Unison, in 1990, although she barely spoke the language. Her real English-language breakthrough was her duet with Peabo Bryson in the title song for the animated film Beauty and the Beast (1991; Academy Award). Subsequent albums include Celine Dion (1992) and The Colour of My Love (1994), with "When I Fall in Love" and "The Power of Love." These albums established her as a hit maker of contemporary pop ballads. In 1995 she returned to her roots and released The French Album.
