  Welcome to the Special Education Department!

The Special Education Department at Secondary Virtual School provides identified students with a variety of services to support them through secondary school.  Our goal is to foster students’ abilities to become independent and self-advocating lifelong learners. 
Secondary Virtual School offers a variety of programs to support exceptional learners:
Community classes: This in a non-credit functional life stills program designed to provide programming for students identified with autism.  Students work towards goals as outlined in their IEP (Individual Education Plan). 
And, credit bearing community classes: This program is for students identified with an Autism Spectrum Disorder who are working towards obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.  This ASD program provides a structured setting which focusses on social skills, self-regulation skills, communication, advocacy, problem solving and learning skills.  Students are additionally provided with support in their other classes.  This is a two-year program for students in grades 9 and 10.
Learning Strategies:
Grades 9 and 10 (GLE10 and GLE20)
These courses focus on learning strategies to help students become better, more independent learners.  Students will learn how to develop and apply literacy and numeracy skills, personal management skills, interpersonal and teamwork skills to improve achievement in school, the workplace and the community.  These courses help student build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school and beyond.  Literacy skills is an intensive focus in both courses.
Grades 11 and 12:  (GLE30 and GLE40)
These courses improve students’ learning and personal management skills, preparing them to make successful transitions to work, training and/or post-secondary education destinations. Students will access their learning abilities and use literacy, numeracy, research and personal management techniques to maximize their learning.  Students will investigate trends and resources to support their post-secondary education choices, employment and/or training and develop and plan to meet their individual goals.
