Principal’s & Vice Principal’s Message 

Donald Cousens P.S. is a school where staff, students and our school community at large matter and belong. All of our classes for the 2021-2022 school year are Hybrid which means some students in each class are Face to Face and some are online. Despite this, we believe strongly in building one learning community, inclusive of students learning remotely and face-to-face in the classroom.

 We are committed to the Four Guiding Principles as outlined in YRDSB’s Caring and Learning Plan which include prioritizing well-being and emotional connections, establishing strong relationships among staff, students and families, centering students who are marginalized and having high expectations for all students. Despite the challenges we have been faced with during the Pandemic, our commitment to supporting our students and their families remains strong.

Our staff is invested in each student’s learning and emotional well-being and is driven by the goals of the School Improvement Plan, which align with the Director’s Annual Plan. Some of these goals include fostering and nurturing a learning environment that is inclusive, providing strong Math and Literacy programs that reflect students’ identities, needs and interests and fostering well-being and positive mental health. We strive to design programs that are innovative in their approach and to create learning environments that promote social collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving. We respond and take immediate action to address issues of racism and hatred and understand there is more work to do in this area. We will be working with our families, staff and students to do this very important work together.

We work in partnership with our School Council to ensure a common vision and common goals are established. The involvement of our school community is welcome as their input also supports student learning, achievement and well-being.

We are committed to being of service to our school community and providing a wide variety of opportunities that will engage our students in many ways. Please do not hesitate to contact us directly should you require our support.
