The Core
The International Baccalaureate Organization outlines the three core elements as:
- Theory of knowledge, in which students reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
- The extended essay, which is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
- Creativity, activity, service, CAS, in which students complete a project related to those three concepts.
At Maple High School students complete the Theory of Knowledge in a grade 11 course, HZB3M starting in the grade 11 year and completing the course in the grade 12 year.
The Extended Essay is an independent project with support from the library and a teacher mentor. Students begin the Extended Essay in grade 11 and finish it by December of the grade 12 year.
CAS is completed independently with support from Guidance and supervisors for each activity and project. CAS starts at the beginning of the grade 11 year and is completed by March of the grade 12 year.
