Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

“Little School With a Big Heart”
The
George Street Motto
The town of Aurora was established in the
late 1700’s and by 1853 the railway was being built through Aurora from
Toronto. By 1863 the population was 700
and by 1888, 2,107. There was only one
school in Town that served all grades, “Aurora Public School” located in the
current Aurora Cultural Centre. In 1888
the high school was built in the Wells Street School location then called
Aurora and District High School.

As years passed and the population grew
more and more the need for another elementary school on the west side of Yonge
Street was apparent. The biggest reason
the school was proposed for the west side of Yonge was to prevent the children
from crossing the main artery of the town, Yonge Street. The school board had purchased the site on
George Street in 1950 in anticipation of a population growth. They purchased the 4 acre property for
$5400.00. The school was to be built
with a Kindergarten room, library, 4 classrooms and a principal’s office. The plans included room for an additional 6
classrooms to be added when the needs arose.
The proposed cost of the construction was $98,730.00.
