Dedication to Family Studies: This is awarded to a student who has taken more than four courses in Family Studies over the course of their high school education, has demonstrated excellence consistantly, and is pursuing a related career. Students are asked to apply for this award in their graduating year.
Baby Think-it-Over
Grade 11 Parenting students will have the opportunity to participate in a parenting simulation using the Baby Think-it-Over infant simulator. This "computer baby" will similate an infant by responding to stimulation by an assigned student parent. Students will be responsible for tending to the infant simulator for a period of 48 hours. Many students find this activity to be an eye opening experience that helps them relate to how it feels to be a parent. The simulation experience is an opportunity for students to communicate with their parents about how life was when they were infants, to discuss how parenting will affect their lives and in particular, their careers and goals, in the future.
Proton Food Handling CertificateStudents in grade 12 Nutrition and Health will be given the opportunity to complete the examination conducted by the York Region Public Health department for certification as a safe food handler. This certification is valid for five years and indicates that the student is familiar with the tasks and obligations required for serving food that is safe for consumption. There is a seven dollar charge for this testing.
Fashion Portfolio
Students in grade 12 The Fashion Industry will be given the opportunity to prepare artifacts that can be used for a work portfolio which is often required to apply to fashion related post-secondary institutions. Students will be able to select the type of artifact they want to create and will recieve feedback and instruction from their teacher to guide their process.
