Concert Band

The Concert Band is open to students who wish to enrich their instrumental music experience. We practice during recess. We have performances throughout the year and we also go to Music Alive each spring to play for a judge who gives us feedback to help improve our skills. It's a weekly highlight to hear the students create such beautiful music!

   Equity Club

Glen Cedar now has an Equity Club with over thirty members. We know that students learn best in an environment in which they feel respected, safe and included.  We are working to build an Increasingly equitable and positive environment at our school.
Initiatives that students are planning to embark on include: an 18-day Kindness Challenge (random acts of kindness are rewarded with character crows), cultural celebrations (including food, music, and dance), guest speakers, anti-bullying initiatives, creating a DVD, skits, and posters to teach about fairness.
Stay tuned for the Equity Club announcements as we have lots of fun things planned!
Equity Mission Statement As a individuals, we celebrate our differences and appreciate our commonalities.  Our school environment represents and is accessible to all students and staff.  We value differences in culture religion, socio-economic status, family configuration, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical/cognitive abilities.

Grad Committee

The Grad Committee is a group of Grade 8 students who have applied for the position to help plan their final year at Glen Cedar. They keep busy organizing grad fundraisers, co-planning their end-of-year trip and generating ideas and plans for their grad theme and reception.

LeadLeadership Group

This group consists of students from Grades 3 to 8 who wish to help out and organize school wide events. The students who have either volunteered or been chosen to represent their class meet Monday morning recess in Room 12. The group has already organized the December Food Drive and School Spirit Days for this year. There are many more leadership opportunities available throughout the year.

Power Playeres

This is a group of 12 dedicated students that have been trained by our York Region Public Health nurse to promote physical activity and cooperative play at recess. Students in grades five through eight can be Power Players. One day a week they spend morning recess and lunch interacting with the primary students in the yard. Instead of being idle at recess and during lunch hours, boys and girls can become involved in games of skill, balance and agility.

Stamp Club

There is a STAMP CLUB that meets every Wednesday in the Library at morning recess. Mrs. Betty O'Rourke is the leader of the club and has been running this popular learning event for 6 years at Glen Cedar Public School. Mrs. O'Rourke brings a great deal of knowledge, story-telling, and amazing old stamps for the students to learn about and keep in their stamp books!  We are very fortunate to have Mrs. O'Rourke share so much of her time preparing and running the stamp club!

Tech Crew

This team of trained individuals is called upon to set up the microphone, sound system, lighting and technology carts at school assemblies and special functions, often arriving before school to do so. The crew is primarily composed of Grade 7 and 8 students who are interested in being responsible for the “behind the scenes” success of our presentations and performances.

You're The Chef

This program is offered through the York Region Health Department. We have a staff member trained and can offer the program to our students. The goal of this program is to help develop the skills and confidence necessary for Grade 6,7 and 8 students to prepare healthy and tasty recipes emphasizing vegetables and fruit. It is a three week session usually offered in the Fall and again in the Spring to any interested students.

Chess Club

The Glen Cedar Chess Club is open to students in Grades 1 to 8 who know how to play chess or would like to learn. Each Thursday morning recess in Room 12, students play against each other in friendly chess matches, often helping one another learn new strategies and practice their finishing moves. Older students will mentor younger learners so that everyone learns the basics. In the winter, the top three players from each grade are chosen by a round robin competition to represent Glen Cedar at the Optimist Club Chess Invitational Tournament in Newmarket. Chess Club will run until early spring, and new members are welcome to come out anytime.
