Literacy Week Jan 27th-30th
January 27th is Canadian Literacy Day. It is a day where we are trying to have students pause and think about how lucky we are as Canadians to be educated and literate, and to have so many opportunities. To celebrate Literacy day at John McCrae, we have put together a week of activities for the students. Here is a brief description of some of the events we have been planning.

*Guest readers - Junior and intermediate classes will have someone from the school or the community come in to read their favourite book at an agreed upon time during the week. Primary classes will have guest author, Gwen Petreman in on Monday January 27th, to read and talk with them. A note will be going home with the participating classes.

*Cultural creations - groups of 2 or 3 gr. 7 or 8 students present something of interest from their culture to a junior or primary class. This may include a dance, craft, sport or activity, or drama presentation.

*Dress up day- on Thursday January 30th, students and teachers may dress up as a character from a story

*Special literacy guest - each class will have a special visitor (a fish) come to spend some time with them before moving on to another class. This visitor would enjoy being read to :)

Kick off to the Me to We Initiative, "We create change" where the Me to We club will be collecting change to be donated towards building a school house in a developing country. A letter will be sent home this week.

*JMPS Reading Race - teachers will track how much time their class reads at school and at home throughout the week. All of the hours read will be added together each day to form a pictograph that will make it’s way around the halls of our school. There will be a contest in the library to guess how many hours JMPS students can read in the course of a week. Check the library blog at www.mccraelibrary.wordpress.com for a daily total!

Thank you so much for your support!
