What is a Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)?

 

The SHSM is a Ministry-approved specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma and assists in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace. The program enables students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in the context of engaging, career-related learning environments and helps them focus on graduation and pursuing their postsecondary goals.

 

What SHSM programs are being offered at Maple High School?
Maple HS is currently offering SHSM programs in the:
  • Arts and Culture sector
  • Business sector
  • Health and Wellness sector
  • Non-Profit sector.
 
What careers could a SHSM student pursue?
Graduates would pursue postsecondary training in a wide variety of areas such as (but not limited to):
  • Health and Wellness - Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Worker, Nursing, Paramedic, Kinesiology, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Fitness Instructor, Speech Pathology or Medical Secretary.
  • Business – Clerk, Special Events Coordinator, Bookkeeper, Legal Secretary, Executive Assistant, Financial Analyst, Real Estate Agent, Human Resources Specialist or Retail Salesperson
  • Arts and Culture – Painter, Decorator, gem setter, patternmaker, actor, photographer, graphic designer, fashion designer, broadcast technician, writer, composer, dancer, curator, director, PR entertainer, musician or weaver
  • Non-Profit – conference and event planner, public affairs officer, social policy researcher, fundraising consultant, non-profit business/office manager, festival organizer, administrative officer or developmental service worker

How do students enrol in the SHSM program?
1.     Complete the online application at bit.ly/YRDSBSHSNapp
Print off the application and hand it into the SHSM box in the Guidance Office.
2.     Select the necessary courses for the program.
