Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

The Drama Department at Markham District High School focuses on developing performing, directing and leadership skills that our students can use not only inside the drama classroom, but in all areas of life.
Innovation and creative problem solving are considered two of the top qualities needed in the work force of the 21st century. We seek to develop creative and critical thinking, skills that are crucial for career advancement. We encourage our students to become imaginative, flexible problem solvers and more confident, self-directed learners. With the shift in focus to digital learning and technology, students need opportunities to build physical relationships and social skills. All students of all abilities make human connections through drama. It deepens communication skills across the curriculum.
They learn how to use their voice and physicality in job interviews in grade 9 and 10, how to collaborate and make decisions as a group through scene work, and how to manage a group to achieve a goal in their final summative plays in grade 11 and 12. Drama is empowering students to use their voices and bodies to tell stories and express emotions. Our students learn how to communicate ideas, perspectives and points of view in creative ways. They develop empathy by stepping into the shoes of another.
The skills learned in our classes are not just limited to the theatre, but we still do many of the traditional drama activities. We participate in school assemblies, community events and put on our own shows at the school.
