JAZZ ENSEMBLES
Participating in a small ensemble allows you to explore music more independently. Whether it is chamber music, jazz, or contemporary music, we have a small ensemble suited for your taste! (If we don't; why not make your own?) It is a chance to make friends, bond, and grow as a musician.
Opus One, the grade 9 Jazz ensemble at MDHS is composed of students in the grade 9 instrumental music program. The group rehearses together every Thursday after school.
These budding musicians learn standards in jazz repertoire, as well as jazz basics, and get the chance to perform at several venues over the year such as the Chapters gig and the year-end performance at the Duchess along Main St. Markham. Look forward to seeing this group grow – you won’t want to miss their opener, aptly named ‘Opus One’!

Ever wanted to sing somewhere other than in the safety of your own shower? Sing your hearts out with MDHS vocal! Under the direction of Mrs. Caswell and her many wild sound effects and made-up words, the MDHS vocal program continues to inspire its students to sing out and use their own voices to their fullest potential, with a Junior Vocal and Senior Vocal class.
The Markham Vocal program boasts three choirs, all directed by Mrs. Caswell: Resonance, an exciting and fun choir with a particular focus on new singers offering a wide range of light music; Chamber Choir, an auditioned choir for soprano-alto-tenor-bass repertoire; and Third Stream, a jazz choir. With all this selection, you will definitely find yourself and your voice a place, and you can sing somewhere other than your own shower.
