    Grade 9 Course
      Visual Arts, Open (AVI1O1)
      This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures.

    Grade 10 Courses
      Visual Arts, Grade 10, Open (AVI2O1)
      This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objectives may be achieved either through a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (e.g., drawing, painting).
       
      Crafts, Grade 10, Open (AWA2O1)
      This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts.

    Grade 11 Courses
      Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preparation (AVI3M1)
      This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills utilizing a variety of media. Students will also analyze art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world.
       
      Art Design, Grade 11, University/College Preparation (AWE3M1)
      This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyze art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world. Students will create graphic design projects (logos, posters, murals) using technical tools and airbrushes.
       
      Photography, Grade 11, University/College Preparation (AWQ3M1)
      This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyze art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world. This course begins with the technical aspects of photography. Creative personal images with special effects are then made. A 35mm manual camera is used.



    Media Arts: Animation, Gr 11, University/College Preparation (ASM3M1)
     

    This course focuses on the development of media arts skills through the production of art works involving traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques such as new media, computer animation, and web environments. Students will explore the evolution of media arts as an extension of traditional art forms, use the creative process to produce effective media art works, and critically analyze​ the unique characteristics of this art form. Students will examine the role of media artists in shaping audience perceptions of identity, culture, and values.



    Grade 12 Courses
      Visual Arts, Grade 12, University/College Preparation (AVI4M1)
      This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyze art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work using a variety of media and demonstrating a personal approach.
       
      Art Design, Grade 12, University/College Preparation (AWE4M1)
      This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyze art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach. This course focuses on commercial drawing and painting illustration techniques. Students will design logos and book covers, create comic book characters, and do illustrations for books or advertisements.
       
      Photography, Grade 12, University/College Preparation (AWQ4M1)
      This course focuses on the refinement of students' skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyze art forms; use theories of art in analyzing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach. This course covers journalistic, architectural, fashion, portrait and product photography and applies computer technology to still photography. A 35mm manual camera with built-in light meter is required. AWQ3O (Grade 11 Photography) is highly recommended.



    Yearbook, Gr 12, University/College Preparation (AWS4M1)

     

    This course further builds on digital and design skills in order to develop expertise as an effective visual communicator. This course enables students to further develop their creative and critical thinking and analysis skills as they design, produce, market and promote the annual yearbook. Students will create a lasting record through the use of photography, video, computer graphics and design. Students will study current trends and developments in new media to develop creative solutions to design problems.
