Welcome to Middlefield Collegiate Institute’s Mathematics Department

PROGRAM RATIONALE:

Mathematics provides us with foundational skills to further ourselves in this ever-growing universe.  It is used in fields such as engineering, medicine, technology and communications, and is an essential tool used to explore everyday phenomena.  These foundational skills remain a focus in innovative problem solving, both individually and collaboratively, with effective communication and critical thinking.  Students will become confident problem solvers who use mathematical knowledge, skills and processes to be contributing members of a changing society.

VISION STATEMENT:

Middlefield’s mathematics teachers believe that every student can learn and so we aim to provide an environment that is conducive to learning; one which will motivate our students and provide them with opportunities to maximize their potential.  Students are encouraged to be problem-solvers and risk-takers who will find mathematics meaningful.  Our optimal goal for our students is that, over time, they will embrace and epitomize the school’s motto, “High Expectations, High Achievement,” becoming numerate high school students and beyond.

MISSION STATEMENT:

The teachers of the mathematics department at Middlefield fall nothing short of exemplary educators.  We are committed to delivering the curriculum in a manner that challenges students to do and be their best.  Our goal is to create a collaborative learning culture, which continuously opens the curious minds of our students.  Ensuring students’ success in mathematics involves controlling a number of different factors; teachers provide students with an encouraging atmosphere while adopting various learning strategies that provide students with the feeling of security, thereby maximizing the learning that occurs in class.

Our teachers motivate and encourage students by providing varied opportunities for them to learn and grow mathematically through:
  • Diverse Course Offerings:
    • offering pathways such as Advanced Placement (A.P.) to further prepare students for the high level of academics in university
  • Assessment & Evaluation (A & E)
    • monitoring students’ learning through regular observations and assessments
    • guiding instruction via carefully determined learning targets & success criteria
    • opportunities (such as national math contests) to meet high expectations
  • Rich Learning Tasks
    • engaging students and challenging them by planning lessons focused on developing mathematical knowledge and critical thinking skills
    • providing opportunities to apply knowledge & understanding skills in a variety of ways
  • Technology
    • enhancing instruction through the use of technology and resources such as the most up-to-date graphing calculators, SMART Boards, and tablets.  Students participate excitedly and learn in an interconnected community.
