Online Resources to Support Literacy at Home


 

The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online® - https://storylineonline.net/ , streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside  creatively produced illustrations.


To encourage family engagement and a love of reading at home, PBS KIDS - https://www.pbs.org/parents/read-along  offers families a place to come together and read along with fan-favorites on YouTube.
 
A digital library for preschool and primary learners that’s free and easy to use for teachers and families alike. Unite for LIteracy - https://www.uniteforliteracy.com/  offers books that are read in several different languages.

Tumble Book Library - https://www.tumblebooklibrary.com/home.aspx  is directed at Kindergarten to Grade 4 students.  Tumble Book Library includes unique animated, talking picture books, read-along chapter books, non fiction books and videos, and curated playlists. Plus, the collection features Graphic Novels – a student favorite!


Sora Reading app is directed at Primary to Intermediate readers

Sora is an online book site (this is the app version of Overdrive books) that allows access to thousands of popular, high-quality books and videos. All students have free access. Students do not need teachers to set up class accounts to read texts from this account.  Students can earn badges and rewards and complete comprehension assignments. Students can read or listen to these books using a Chromebook, desktop computer, or personal mobile device.


Steps:


  1. Download the Sora app from the Google app store here


  1. Enter the library and school name as: “York Region District School Board”


  1. Students enter "0" plus their student number, no password is needed
