Assessment and Evaluation Policy

Assessment in math courses is based on the following four categories.

1. Knowledge and Understanding
     ·    Are you able to use mathematical tools and ideas?
     ·    Can you demonstrate your understanding of mathematical concepts?

     ·    This category will be marked analytically.
     ·    All recorded marks will count towards your final mark.

2. Application
     ·    Can you select the right mathematical tool or idea to apply to scenarios involving a realistic context?

     ·    This category will be marked analytically.
     ·    All recorded marks will count towards your final mark.

3. Communication
     ·    Do you use appropriate mathematical form and vocabulary when answering questions?
     ·    Are you able to explain steps or the reasons you chose a particular plan in a solution?
     ·    Are you able to read and interpret mathematical scenarios?

     ·    This category will always be marked using a rubric.
      ·   All recorded marks will count towards your final mark.

4. Thinking
     ·    Can you develop and execute a plan to solve a problem that may require insight or the use of multiple mathematical tools?
     ·    Can you make and justify conclusions using mathematical models?

     ·    This category will sometimes be marked using a rubric.
     ·    All recorded marks will count towards your final mark.

Assignments Policy

Assignments are tasks that may take the form of journal entries, sample questions, or projects.  It is the Mathematics Department policy that assignments submitted past the due date receive a 5% deduction per day to a maximum of ten school days.   Once this ten day period has past, a mark of zero shall be allocated.

Formative/Summative Evaluations

Assessments in math courses may contain formative and summative components.  Formative components will be used to provide feedback and will not be used in the calculation of your mark.  Summative components will be used in the calculation of your mark.  Your teacher will distinguish between formative and summative prior to an assessment.  Always try your best on formative components because the feedback provided will help you to do well on future summative components.

Missed Test/Quiz Policy

Please be aware of the Mathematics Department policy regarding missed tests and quizzes.   If a student is aware of an upcoming absence, and if it happens to coincide with a scheduled quiz or test date, it is the student’s responsibility to consult his/her math teacher.  In the event of a missed test or quiz, the student will write the evaluation the day he/she returns, unless the student was absent for more than 2 days.  Should a student not provide adequate documentation for having missed the evaluation, a mark of zero will be allocated.
