The Geography of War
IDC3O1
This course traces the geographical patterns of war. Warfare is vastly different in the 21st century than even a hundred years ago, when battles were fought primarily at close range. Even the most well-equipped army of today, with sophisticated tanks, planes, subs and technology is subject to geography, including topography, terrain, vegetation, climate, and weather. Despite its technological superiority, for example, U.S. forces found the mountains of Afghanistan as difficult an obstacle as had armies dating back to Alexander the Great.
Students will learn about wars and regional geography over various time periods, from the armies of ancient Egypt and Rome, the knights of Medieval times to modern nuclear warfare, and war’s effects on political and social structures. Students will discover the importance of geography and war in historical studies of chronology and cause-and-effect relationships. As well, they will be given opportunities to formulate appropriate questions, develop informed opinions, and present information in a variety of ways.
