Black River P.S. opened in the fall of 1996. Our school name was inspired by the Black River, which flows through the center of Sutton. We are part of the Sutton Distict High School family of schools and have a current enrollment of 250 students.
Our school colours are purple and white and our mascot is the Black River Bear. We celebrate our Black River BEAR Spirit through our school moto, which challenges all members ofour school community (staff, students and families) to strive to:
Be Excellent And Respectful
Our school is located in Sutton, in the Town of Georgina, close to Lake Simcoe. We offer programming from Kindergarten through Grade Eight and host two Autism Community Classes as well as instruction in the Ojibwe language and traditions. We are part of the Sutton Multi-Use Complex, which also includes St. Bernadette Catholic School, the Georgina Leisure Pool, Peter Gzowski Library and a child care facility operated by Upper Canada Child Care. We also appreciate our on-going collaboration with the Chipewas of Georgina Island as our partners in education.
Along with the pool and library, the facility is purposed for community use with a full size soccer field, baseball diamond and four full basketball courts available on the grounds. However, the school complex operates under the
Ministry of Education and YRDSB
Caring and Safe Schools requirements relating to student safety and security during school hours.
We are proud, through our actions and words, to advocate the Mission of the York Region District School Board. “To advance student achievement and well-being through public education, which motivates learners, fosters inclusion, inspires innovation and builds community.”
