Inform Yourself!
There are many different programs available at post-secondary schools. Every school has its own set of pre-requisites for similar programs. Keep track of which school requires what pre-requisite(s). Before you begin Grade 12, research your choices to ensure that you are taking the right courses in your graduating year. Read all College and University Information books carefully. Be sure to consult sites on the Internet so that you have the latest information. Attend the Fairs that take place in September and October. Visit each campus to see if the school is the right fit.
It's Your Life!
You are responsible for your own future. Talk with people who are currently working in the career(s) of interest to you.
Ask college/university representatives questions about their programs. You may apply to several schools for the same program, but each school may have different requirements with different timelines and deadlines.
Stay Organized!
Keep track of information/letters sent from various post-secondary schools. Create a folder for each school that you are applying to. Some schools may require a personal profile, a résumé, an interview, an audition, a placement test, and/or a portfolio. Keep a record of personal information, such as, user names, passwords that you are asked to create, and personal identification numbers (PINs) -- used to apply to universities.
Be Prepared!
Although you have researched, visited, organized yourself, and asked questions, it is always a good idea to have a back-up plan. Be prepared for the tuition that you will have to pay. How much will your schooling cost per year? How will you pay? Do you have savings from part-time or summer jobs? Will you apply for the Ontario Assistance Program (OSAP)?
