Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

Personalized Alternative Education
PAE are a system of educational
alternatives that have grown from the grass roots in each school. They
are distinguished from main stream programming in that they frequently
use an unconventional classroom settings and and altered timetables in order to service the indivual needs to students.
Most
PAE programmes take a wholistic approach to student progress in that we
create student programmes with the entire student in mind (social,
emotional, mental, academic).
There is a focus on developing the skill set required for the 21st century learning.
- Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
- Collaboration across Networks and Leading by Influence
- Agility and Adaptability
- Initiative and Entrepreneurialism
- Effective Oral and Written Communication
- Accessing and Analyzing Information
- Curiosity and Imagination
Quadmester Programmes These
are nine week, two period courses that run four times per year. Courses
vary by school and region. Some schools offer multi-level, multi grade
courses which run on a reduced class size (1:16 teacher student ratio).
PAE Semestered Programmes These
programmes are unique and vary from location to location. They operate
on a reduced class size (1:16 teacher student ratio) and combine teacher
directed courses with independent learning and credit recovery. They
generally follow the regular school semester.
Experiential, Community Based Programmes These
progammes generally utilize community partnerships to provide real
world projects. They usually include both class room learning and
experiential, field work. Programme duration varies: some are full year
others are semestered. All field work is directly supervised by the
teacher.
