School Closure

How do you make the decision to close schools vs. when to cancel transportation?

Bus cancellations are related to road conditions being unfavourable for buses and bus transportation. Schools remain open on these days.

School closures will be rare and are related to school and board sites and facilities being unsafe or inaccessible for students and staff. This would include unprecedented weather events or emergency situations.

If schools are closed, where can I send my child? Will I be reimbursed for the costs of childcare?

Families will need to make alternate arrangements for child care in the instance of a school closure. This is why we are notifying families in advance, in order to provide you with the requisite time to make plans. We will let families know as early as possible, and no later than 6:00 a.m. if schools are closed.

Will daycares located in schools also be closed?

Daycares located in school buildings will also be closed on days that schools are closed. If the school is unsafe for students and staff, it will also be unsafe for children and staff members at the daycare. We are working with our daycare providers to ensure they have all the information they need in the rare occurrence of a school closure.

Will before and after care operate on these days?

If schools are closed due to unprecedented winter weather events or emergency situations, before and after care will not operate. These situations will be rare, however, we do ask that families have alternate arrangements in place for the care of their children.

How early will you notify parents about school closures? We need time to plan for child care.

We will make every effort to notify families about potential school closures as early as soon as possible, and no later than 6:00 a.m. on the day of a school closure. Families can find confirmation of school closures through:

·         Student Transportation Services website: www.schoolbuscity.com

·         Student Transportation Hotline: 1-877-330-3001

·         Board website and school websites

·         @YRDSB Twitter account

·         Radio and TV media outlets

Why can’t you just close schools whenever buses are cancelled?

We try to keep our schools open as much as possible and will only make the decision to close schools for reasons of safety in rare circumstances during unprecedented winter weather events or emergency situations. School closures would be very rare occurrences.

When we have an after school sporting event we remind parents that students can only stay to watch if they have parent supervision.  We do not have teacher supervision at these events – the teachers who are present are coaching and refereeing and they are not responsible for the spectators.  Thank you for your support.

I received a call from the school.  Who called me?

Phone calls received from the school could be made by any number of staff members from any room in the building.  Please listen to the message before calling the school back, so that the office staff can assist you by putting you in touch with the person who called.

What time are school doors locked?

All entry doors will be locked at 9:15 a.m. and will remain locked throughout the day and evening . Parents, visitors and school staff will need to ring the doorbell located by the front entry doors and identify themselves to the office staff before being allowed entrance to the building.  Parents, we recommend that your child has everything they need for the day (lunch, change of clothing, shoes, boots, warm clothes, homework, agendas, et cetera) to prevent waiting to be buzzed in if office staff are unavailable.  Only the parents of Le Club children will be able to access the school after 4:30 p.m.
