Welcome to Writer’s
Craft! When you join a craft community, you come prepared to present your work
in progress, to collaborate with others, to discuss, to challenge, to refine,
and to assess your own work in order to make it exceptional. As your teacher, I
will work as your coach and guide, but you will also learn a great deal from
your classmates, and you will act to support each other. You will write
regularly; you will read widely. Many different forms and genres of writing
will be studied and practised, including short fiction, poetry, screenplays,
sitcoms, drama, novels, and non-fiction.
Many classes will begin with assigned writing prompts, which will help
you to develop the habit of writing. To be a writer, you need to practise your
craft with regularity.
Some of you will be particularly interested
in creative writing as a career; others will have chosen this course to improve
your writing skills. Still, others will regard writing as a pleasurable hobby,
while your priorities lie elsewhere. All of you will have come to this course
with specific skills and experiences that will enrich the writer’s craft
community.
