The ‘Golden Garbage Can’ Award

Each month the Caretakers present this award to the class who keeps their classroom tidy and clean and shows proper waste management through the sorting of organics, recycling and garbage on a daily basis during the month.  They present the ‘Golden Garbage Can’  award at the monthly Rocket Rally.  The name of the class who wins each month is written on the can.

For the month of October,  the ‘Golden Garbage Can’  award was presented to
Mr. Yusuf’s Grade 7 class!

Congratulations!

**************************************************************
We have exciting news for you and your child(ren)! Little Rouge Public School is planning for the addition of an outdoor classroom to be constructed for our students!

Outdoor classrooms provide a multitude of real benefits for children. They are a place where students can connect with nature, and not only for curriculum learning, but for fun too! Outdoor classrooms also provide a much-needed meeting place and play area for students during their recess/free time. The physical and mental health gains, along with the enhancement to learning in an outdoor setting, are invaluable.

There is a committee of school staff that are coordinating the planning, and construction of the Outdoor Classroom, as well as writing grant applications with the hope that we can secure additional funding from school greening support organizations. The School Council would like to support this initiative with a targeted fundraising program. For us to turn this outdoor classroom project into a reality, we will need to raise a significant amount of money. Based on the YRDSB’s design plan and contractor quotes, the total cost of the outdoor classroom will be approximately $19 000.

We are asking that you consider making an investment in your children’s education by donating to the construction of the outdoor classroom. All donations will go directly to this project. The Investment in Education Program is a common program in York Region which involves parents making an optional donation to the school through the School Council. In the past, the School Council has used these generous donations to purchase technology, enhance the playground equipment, and support field trips and presentations.   **The Investment in Education Program is in accordance with the Student Fees Policy #671 and the School Fundraising Administration of School Generated Funds Policy #676. Schools may raise funds for school yard improvement projects, such as, but not limited to, playground equipment, shade structures and gardens, with prior approval from Plant Services.

Here’s how you can participate:

Boomerang Lunch Program

HOW IT WORKS:

· Garbage that comes to school goes home
· Uneaten food and waste material is returned home in your child’s lunch bag
· Recyclable and compostable materials can be disposed of AT SCHOOL

BOOMERANG LUNCH GOALS:

· Reducing the amount of waste we create from school lunches
· Reducing the cost of waste disposal so the school’s resources can be put to better use.
· Encouraging healthy and nutritious lunches (many pre-packaged lunch items contain significant amounts of sugar, sodium, preservatives and fat)
· Creating awareness around recycling and composting
· Encouraging and promote the use of reusable containers and to discourage the use of disposable containers
· Helping you as a parent reduce the cost of lunches (a waste-free lunch can cost as little as $2.50 per day, whereas a lunch containing pre-packaged items can cost $4.50 or more per day)

WASTE FREE SNACK/ LUNCH TIPS:

· Use reusable lunch bags and containers.
· Use reusable drink bottles or a thermos.
· Use a cloth napkin and reusable utensils.
· Avoid using plastic wrap and “Ziploc” baggies
· Get your children to help pack their snacks/lunches with healthy foods.
· Only pack as much food as your child will eat.
· Label all containers with an initial or special symbol.

We look forward to your continuing support and hope you will join hands with us in teaching our students to be environmentally responsible citizens.

Thank you,
The Little Rouge Eco Team

Eco Team

What’s it all about?
The Little Rouge Eco Team is open to any students in grades 2-8 who are interested in making a difference in our Environment.  We meet every Wednesday at morning recess and talk about things we can do to raise awareness in our school and community and let people know how their choices impact the environment.  We do regular “lights out” checks to see which classes turn out their lights when everyone is out of the room.  We’ve also begun doing “Sorting” checks to make sure students put their waste in the correct bin – recycle, compost or garbage.

Litterless Lunches at Little Rouge

As an ecoschool, we are focused on making wise environmental choices to benefit our local and global community.
One of our first eco initiatives is to examine the waste that we are producing as a school and work really hard at reducing it. We have found that a great deal of our waste is coming from lunches and snacks. We would like all students and parents to make a serious effort to pack litterless lunches and snacks.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

1) Use reusable containers instead of plastic wrap or plastic bags.
2) Pack stainless steel forks and spoons or wash and reuse your plastic ones over and over.
3) Use a reusable lunch box or bag, avoid plastic bags or paper bags.
4) Pack your water or juice in a reusable container and avoid juice boxes or disposable plastic bottles.

What can you do at home?
We are now collecting empty printer cartridges, old laptops and cell phones that are no longer being used.  There is a “THINK RECYCLE” bin outside the main office where you can drop these electronic items off for recycling.
We also encouraged students to come to school with reusable containers and water bottles to reduce the amount of waste we are adding to landfills.

Tree planting in our community:
Next time you drive by the field at the corner of Donald Cousens Parkway and Ninth Line, take a look at all of the trees our grade 2s and 3s planted (with the help of some grade 7s and 8s) last month!  The students spent 2 days planting about 200 trees!  It was a lot of hard work, but very rewarding as well!

EcoSchools Certification:
The Eco team and the entire school community has worked very hard at educating ourselves about the environment and what we can do to make a difference.  We have submitted our application for review, and will hear back soon to see what level we will be certified this year!  Stay tuned!!
