School Improvement Plan 429
School Improvement Plan
Markham Gateway P.S. is committed to supporting the Board's literacy focus under the three Board focus areas of Quality Schools, Building Family and Community Capacity and Quality Workplaces

The following is an outline of our school's Plan for Continuous Improvement including highlights of some of the strategies to support student achievement.

Our goals, as they relate to the implementation the Quality Schools focus, predicate the commitment to ensure that all students acquire literacy skills to enable them to be successful in the future.  As noted in our ‘School Code and Operating Ethics', we embrace the principles of Effective Schools research which indicate that clearly communicated high expectations, dedicated and caring staff, structured daily routines, a clearly articulated school vision, time on task and home and school open communication all contribute to our academic, social and personal successes.  We are a community of learners!

Our goals, as they relate to the focus on Parental and Community Involvement, center upon our initiatives to achieve interactive partnerships that support individuals' needs as they contribute to the enrichment of our school culture. An active School Council that focuses and extends our commitment to the Board's literacy focus and strong staff support allows us to effectively pursue our goals in this area.  Classroom volunteers, regular divisional Recognition assemblies, community participation, qualitative assessment strategies, continuous and regular staff development workshops and our conscious efforts to assuring a sense of team amongst all stakeholders contribute to our successes in this area.

Our goals, as they relate to our commitment to Quality Workplaces, lay their foundation in our careful attention to student participation and successes, EQAO results, report card results, inclusive approaches to all community members, our commitment, modelling and clear articulation of the board of education's engagement regarding issues of antiracism and ethno cultural equity, character education, school communications such as Newsletters, Agendas, Curriculum Nights, our non-coercive approach to student discipline issues and our firm belief in the principle that:  ALL STUDENTS CAN SUCCEED have proven to be instrumental in our implementation of this focus.

Our staff's commitment to extending the classroom program with exciting and relevant out-of-school experiences, our school's belief in the necessity for on-going staff development in the areas of assessment and evaluation, technology, the latest research on pedagogical strategies and student development as well as our involvement in such Board initiatives as The Literacy Collaborative Project gives Markham Gateway a strong foundation upon which to build a lasting commitment to the integrity, personal development and sense of self in our of our learners.
