MARKVILLE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT

Markville English is proud to offer a program that guides learning with passion, rigour and accountability. In each grade, students are given opportunities to engage in critical thinking and reading, challenge assumptions, and broaden communication skills in an ever modernized and uber-productive world. We teach our students that language, when used responsibly, provides an opportunity to bring about change, if one is brave enough to speak truthfully.

One of our graduates, Yanan Wang (MSS ‘12) speaks passionately about how her experience in Markville English classrooms helped shaped her into a scholar, leader, and future graduate of Yale University:

“My first exposure to close reading was through the Markville English Department, where teachers spoke passionately and methodically about the significance behind each sentence or turn of phrase. The rigor of the program challenged me to look beyond the immediate possibilities of literature, and to consider it in all it's implications. I will always be grateful for the foundation in critical reading that I was able to build at Markville, as he skills I learned the have stayed with me through my undergraduate education as an English major at Yale.”

Simply put, Markville English strives to bring out greatness in each of its students by offering a variety of rich learning opportunities. Applied courses encourage our students to combine critical thinking with real world experiences, while our ENG4U program has been redesigned to offer university-level research experiences. The AP program, guided by Ms Kim, regularly celebrates Level 5 exam scores. We are so proud of the hard work of our students.

For those who are interested in exploring reading and writing outside of our classrooms,  consider attending the “Be Heard Festival”, YRDSB's longest running Spoken Word Festival (and, after eleven years, one of Canada’s largest), and or our Read Around the World Challenge,’ for students who wish to travel through literature. A new Media Course (EMS 301), taught by Ms Aceto, offers students the chance to step away from textbooks and deconstruct social and cultural trends in social media and includes a field trip to TIFF. Ms Millington runs the Markville Writers Society, and welcomes writers from all backgrounds and interests. If you happen to polish off a piece of writing, why not drop in to see Ms Mitrevski, who co-chairs the Ignite Student Talent Show? Poetry is just one of the art forms in this vibrant showcase, which brings together dance, music, poetry and song in a cultural celebration and fundraiser for the Centre For Dreams.

We have a lot on offer at the Markville English Department.
