Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

Page Content Learning an additional language can be complicated and can take longer to master. It may take some time for students to learn enough English for academic success.
Elementary to Secondary Multilingual Language Learners from the elementary panel planning to enter high school may need to be reassessed for ESL courses in high school. ESL teachers from Markville will consult with elementary ESL teachers in order to decide on the best placement for a student.
ESL to regular English Students who have completed the ESL program move on to regular English courses. Each student meets with their ESL teacher for a recommendation on placement in a regular English class.
Literacy Test (OSSLT)
Once students transition from the ESL program into regular English, they will be required to write the Literacy test (OSSLT). Students must pass the test in order to graduate from high school. If a student is unsuccessful on the OSSLT, through consultation with school administrators, a student may be placed in an OLC course in order to meet graduation requirements. Helpful resources and practice test material will be provided to all students as they prepare to write the OSSLT.
