Grade 10: Canadian History Since World War One (CHC2D)

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  Canadian History Rocks!  Students love Grade 10 history as we delve into our own historical paths and engage with history from the World Wars to the post war to the end of the 20th century! Fan favourite memories of Grade 10 history always include the simulation ‘Fall of Giants’, the Stockmarket Game, WWII Debates, Fun Fact Friday, and of course, ‘Rock Your Decade’!!!  All our tasks and activities ‘BUILD THE SKILLS’ necessary to be engaging, creative and critical thinkers!


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:
This course explores social, economic, and political developments and events and their impact on the lives of different individuals, groups, and communities, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals and communities, in Canada since 1914. Students will examine the role of conflict and cooperation in Canadian society, Canada’s evolving role within the global community, and the impact of various individuals, organizations, and events on identities, citizenship, and heritage in Canada. Students will develop an understanding of some of the political developments and government policies that have had a lasting impact on First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals and communities. They will develop their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating key issues and events in Canadian history since 1914.



Grade 10:  Civics and Citizenship (CHV20)

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  Civics allows students to explore what it means to be an informed citizen in a democratic society. From the examination of various leadership and government styles through simulations, to debating electoral issues in a mock federal election, to examining case studies, students learn what democracy looks like in Canada. Students will also engage in global citizenship as they engage critically and creatively in various topics about social change, human rights, political and social movements as well as historical events of the past and current events of today.  

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course explores rights and responsibilities associated with being an active citizen in a democratic society. Students will explore issues of civic importance and the influence of social media, while developing their understanding of the role of civic engagement and of political processes in the local, national, and/or global community. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate, and express informed opinions about, a range of political issues and developments that are both of significance in today’s world and of personal interest to them. This course also includes learning on digital literacy and critical-thinking skills, the mechanisms of government, Indigenous governance systems and structures, the historical foundations of the rights and freedoms we enjoy in Canada, ways in which government policy affects individuals’ lives and the economy, and ways for students to serve their communities.

Grade 11:  World History to the 15th Century  (CHW3M)   [ANCIENT CIV] 

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  It’s a “Blast to the Past”!  In Ancient Civ students will trace the great civilizations of Ancient Egypt, Israel, Greece, Rome, China, Mayan, Aztec, Japan, Middle East, Persia, Mesopotamia and more!  Learn about the first law codes that are still evident today, the influence of religion, arts and government, dabble in a bit of Greek philosophy and Latin, compete at the Greek Olympics, and learn how to properly mummify Pharaoh Ken and Queen Barbie!  In Grade 11 History, students continue to  ‘BUILD THE SKILLS’ to become critical thinkers, dynamic presenters and strong researchers-- so important as senior students!


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course explores the history of various societies and civilizations around the world, from earliest times to around 1500 CE. Students will investigate a range of factors that contributed to the rise, success, and decline of various ancient and pre-modern societies throughout the world and will examine life in and the cultural and political legacy of these societies. Students will extend their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating social, political, and economic structures and historical forces at work in various societies and in different historical eras. 


Grade 11:  World History since 1900: Global and Regional Interactions  (CHT301)

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  A deep dive into the major events that have defined the past century from a global perspective.  Topics include the world wars, the Russian Revolution, Vietnam War, Rwandan Genocide, Apartheid, Partition of India, political / social movements, pivotal historical figures, geo-political alliances and organizations and, of course, your weekly dose of Fun Fact Friday! In Grade 11 History, students continue to  ‘BUILD THE SKILLS’ to become critical thinkers, dynamic presenters and strong researchers-- so important as senior students!


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course focuses on major developments in world history from 1900 to the present. Students will explore the causes and consequences of global and regional conflicts, the impact of significant individuals and social movements, and the effects of social, economic, and political developments around the world. Students will extend their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating interactions within and between nations and other historical developments and events, including those that continue to affect people in various parts of the world.

Grade 11: Individual and the Economy (CIE3M)


MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW: A great introductory course to economics that gives students a new perspective on how our economy works.  We will learn how to use important models to analyze how supply and demand determine the prices of everything around us.  Our stock market simulation always motivates students to put these newfound skills to work to compete against fellow students for the top prizes.  There is a big emphasis on students learning the relevance of economics in their everyday lives through simulations and group projects.

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course explores issues and challenges facing the Canadian economy as well as the implications of various responses to them. Students will explore the economic role of firms, workers, and government as well as their own role as individual consumers and contributors, and how all of these roles contribute to stability and change in the Canadian economy. Students will apply the concepts of economic thinking and the economic inquiry process, including economic models, to investigate the impact of economic issues and decisions at the individual, regional, and national level. 



Grade 12: Analyzing Current Economic Issues  (CIA4U)


MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  An excellent course for students preparing for university.  The course will ensure a successful transition to university economics, especially for students considering a business degree.  Students will develop indepth analysis skills of varied economic situations using key economic models.  Journals will emphasis the relevance of economics through current news article analysis.  Students interested in writing the AP Microeconomics Exam will find the course invaluable. 


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course examines current Canadian and international economic issues, developments, policies, and practices from diverse perspectives. Students will explore the decisions that individuals and institutions, including governments, make in response to economic issues such as globalization, trade agreements, economic inequalities, regulation, and public spending. Students will apply the concepts of economic thinking and the economic inquiry process, as well as economic models and theories, to investigate, and develop informed opinions about, economic trade-offs, growth, and sustainability and related economic issues.


Grade 12: Challenge and Change [CHA CHA] HSB4U

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  Challenge & Change (also known as “Cha Cha”) is a constantly-evolving course that uses social science lenses, including behavioural economics, to make sense of group-behaviours, marketing, social influence, and a range of other topics. In taking this course, students get to apply social science research methods and principles of experimental design.  You may never see the world the same way again! 


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course focuses on the use of social science theories, perspectives, and methodologies to investigate and explain shifts in knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviour and their impact on society. Students will critically analyse how and why cultural, social, and behavioural patterns change over time. They will explore the ideas of social theorists and use those ideas to analyse causes of and responses to challenges such as technological change, deviance, and global inequalities. Students will explore ways in which social science research methods can be used to study social change



Grade 12:  Canadian and International Politics (CPW4U)

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  Students will explore political decision making and ways in which individuals, stakeholder groups, and various institutions, including governments, corporations, and non-governmental organizations, respond to and work to address domestic and international issues. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate issues, events, and developments of national and international political importance, and to develop and communicate informed opinions about them.


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW: This course explores various perspectives on issues in Canadian and world politics. Students will explore political decision making and ways in which individuals, stakeholder groups, and various institutions, including governments, multinational corporations, and non-governmental organizations, respond to and work to address domestic and international issues. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate issues, events, and developments of national and international political importance, and to develop and communicate informed opinions about them. 


Grade 12:  World History Since the 15th Century (CHY4U)

MARKVILLE HISTORY OVERVIEW:  West and the World… this is the grade 12 history course that picks up where the Ancient Civ course (CHW3M) finishes… great prep for university as it covers history from Renaissance up to the 19th century providing background in politics, culture, philosophy, art, and modern thinking.  From seminars to simulations to debates and presentations, this course helps refine those critical and analysis thinking skills and build study skills as senior students. 


CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:  This course traces major developments and events in world history since approximately 1450. Students will explore social, economic, and political changes, the historical roots of contemporary issues, and the role of conflict and cooperation in global interrelationships. They will extend their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, as they investigate key issues and ideas and assess societal progress or decline in world history.
