Grade 9 Academic French

FSF1D1

This course provides opportunities for students to communicate and interact in French with increasing independence with a focus on familiar topics related to their daily lives. Students will continue to develop language knowledge and skills by using language-learning strategies introduced in the elementary French program, and will apply creative and critical thinking skills in various ways. Thematic readings, which include a selection of short stories, articles, and poems, will serve as stepping stones to oral and written activities. Students will also enhance their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop the skills necessary to become life-long language learners.

Prerequisite: Minimum of 600 hours of elementary Core French instructions or equivalent

Grade 9 Applied French

FSF 1P1

This course continues to emphasize the development of oral communication, reading, and writing skills. It provides opportunities for students to communicate and interact in French in structured situations on everyday topics. Students will continue to develop language knowledge and skills introduced in the elementary French program, through practical applications and concrete examples, and will use creative and critical thinking skills in various ways. They will enhance their understanding of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary to become life-long learners.

Prerequisite: Minimum 600 hours of elementary Core French instruction or equivalent.

Grade 9 Open French: Introduction to French

FSF101

This course emphasizes the development of oral communication skills, using the theme of francophone culture. The development of oral communication skills will be integrated with the development of reading and writing skills. Students will develop their ability to understand and speak French through short conversations, practical role-plays, and brief presentations. They will also read dialogues and anecdotes and write brief letters and descriptive paragraphs.

Prerequisite; This course is for English Language Learners with no background in French instruction.

Grade 10 Academic French

FSF 2D1

This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in real-life situations with increasing independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions while exploring a variety of themes. Students will continue to develop their language knowledge and skills through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture globally.

Prerequisite: FSF1D/ FSF1P

Grade 11 University French

FSF3U1

This course offers students extended opportunities to speak and interact in real-life situations in French with greater independence. It draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of reading and writing skills and to reinforce oral communication skills. Students will gain a greater understanding of French-speaking cultures in Canada and globally through their reading of a variety of materials, including a short novel or a play. Students will produce various written assignments, including a short formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course.

Prerequisite: FSF2D1

Grade 12 University French

FSF4U1

This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive

development of language skills. It provides many opportunities for students to speak and interact in French independently.

Students will consolidate their oral skills as they discuss literature, culture, and current issues. They will read a variety of texts and will write a formal essay. The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French will be emphasized throughout the course. Students will continue to enrich their understanding and appreciation of francophone communities while developing the skills necessary for life-long language learning.

Prerequisite: FSF3U1

Grade 10 Spanish

LWS BD1

This course introduces students to language elements they will need to begin to communicate with native speakers. Students will participate in practical activities in which they can apply their knowledge and skills, and will begin to explore careers that require knowledge of Spanish. They will explore aspects of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries, including social customs, music, food, by participating in cultural events and activities involving both print and technological resources.

No prerequisite required. This course is not open to native speakers of Spanish.

Grade 11 University Spanish

LWS CU1

This course offers students opportunities to further develop their knowledge of Spanish and to enhance their communication skills.

Students will use increasingly sophisticated language in a variety of activities that will enable them to speak and write with clarity and accuracy. Students will also enhance their thinking skills through the critical study of literature, and continue to explore aspects of the culture.

Prerequisite: LWS BD1
