Middlefield Music offers courses at all grade levels, and opportunities for all levels of musician from beginner to advanced. 

Grade 9 Music Courses

Course Code ​​Course Description

AMI 1O4

Grade 9 Instrumental Music, Advanced, Lunchtime Course

Students attend class for approximately 35 minutes per day during period 4 lunch.  They learn to extend their technique on their instruments, and foundational concepts in music theory.  Previous instrumental experience from grades 7 & 8 is strongly recommended.

This is an extra-credit course.  Students can still take two semestered electives.

AME 1O1

Grade 9 Instrumental Music, Beginners

Students learn a woodwind or brass instrument, and gain the ability to read music notation.  No previous experience on an instrument is required.

AMR 1O4

Grade 9 Repertoire, Concert Band

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week.  In a concert band setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning important lessons in musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

Students must be enrolled in either AMI 1O4 or AME 1O4.

This is an extra-credit course.   Students can still take two semestered electives.

AMR 1O5

Grade 9 Repertoire, Choir

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week. In a choir setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning ijmportant lesson is musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

This is an extra-credit course.   Students can still take two semestered electives.


Grade 10 Music Courses

AMI 2O4

Grade 10 Instrumental Music, Lunchtime Course

Students continue to improve their technique on an instrument, and explore more of the musical principles introduced in grade 9.  This course runs during the lunch period for approximately 35 minutes per day.

Grade 9 Instrumental Music, Advanced or Beginner, is strongly recommended.

This is an extra-credit course.  Students can still take two semestered electives.

AMK 2O1

Grade 10 Piano, Beginners

Students learn to play the piano, and will be able to play recognizable songs by the end of the term.  They learn about the foundations of the musical language.  No previous musical experience is required.

AMR 2O4

Grade 10 Repertoire, Concert Band

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week.  In a concert band setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning important lessons in musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

Students must be enrolled in AMI 2O4.

This is an extra-credit course.   Students can still take two semestered electives.

AMR 2O5

Grade 10 Repertoire, Choir

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week.  In a choir setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning important lessons in musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

Grade 11 Music Courses

AMI 3M1

Grade 11 Instrumental Music

Students learn more advanced techniques on an instrument, with a focus on improving facility, articulation, and musicianship.  The theory focus is in assembling musical materials to create harmony and other simple compositions.  Students complete an Independent Study to follow a musical point of interest.

pre-requisite: AMI 2O

AMK 3M1

Grade 11 Piano

Students continue to explore the piano and music written for it.  Students prepare music best suited for their ability.  The theory focus is on triads, and their use in popular and jazz music.

pre-requisite: AMK 2O

AMR 3M4

Grade 11 Repertoire, Concert Band

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week.  In a concert band setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning important lessons in musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

Students must be enrolled in AMI 3M1.

This is an extra-credit course.   Students can still take two semestered electives.

AMR 3M5

Grade 11 Repertoire, Choir

Grade 12 Instrumental Music

Students learn more advanced techniques on an instrument, with a focus on improving facility, articulation, and musicianship.  The theory focus is in music musical materials to create compositions.  Students complete an Independent Study to follow a musical point of interest.

AMK 4M1

Grade 12 Piano

Students continue to explore the piano and music written for it.  Students prepare music best suited for their ability.  The theory focus is on four-part harmony and chord progressions.

pre-requisite: AMK 3M

AMR 4M4

Grade 12 Repertoire, Concert Band

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week.  In a concert band setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning important lessons in musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

Students must be enrolled in AMI 4M1.

AMU 4E4

Grade 12 Repertoire, Concert Band (Workplace)

This course is for Grade 12 students who are not able to take the AMI4M1 techniques class, but have prior experience at the Grade 11 level.

Students attend rehearsal after school for approximately two hours, one day per week.  In a concert band setting, they apply their skills to the preparation of music for performance, learning important lessons in musical composition, and the teamwork required to achieve success.

This is an extra-credit course.   Students can still take two semestered electives.

AMR 4M5

Grade 12 Repertoire, Choir
