Why take a Geography course?
Geography is an interdisciplinary subject that investigates content from a variety of subject areas through the lens of spatial analysis. In our modern world, geographers are in great demand as there are important spatial components to many of our local and global issues that are of concern:
- Will we have enough land in York Region to sustain our needs? Where in the world will the next major water crisis be? Why does Canada’s northern population face different challenges to quality of life than in Canada’s southern regions?
Geographers are often needed for business, marketing, government program planning and tourism to name a few key areas of the economy. Their skills help people analyze problems and find solutions that all begin with the question of where. The discipline of geography has come a long way from colouring maps and memorizing national capitals. Today we are a department that focuses on the use of geo-technologies such as Google Maps, Google Earth, and GIS to help visualize spatial data and other programs such as GapMinder to help analyze spatial data for pattern and trend. These geography –specific skills are in high demand in most aspects of the economy, so students will never be left without a place in the workplace.
In addition to geography specific skills, students who take a Geography course will develop their inquiry skills which will transfer to other courses and other aspects of their lives. With focus on deep learning and inquiry, students are able to pursue course content of interest in a meaningful way for the purpose of answering a “Big Question” or solving a complex “Wicked Problem” that is of current concern. This approach eliminates the frequently asked student question “Why are we learning this?” Students will develop various skill sets as they experiment with sharing their learning in a variety of formats, both creative and high tech.
