Department Policy

Personalized Alternative Education emphasizes the term "personalized".  Each student is interviewed and involved in the process of designing a program that best suits the student’s needs.  This is accomplished through the use of the student's individual Credit Counselling Summary outlining all courses successfully completed and those credits outstanding.  This collaboration with the teacher encourages the student to work hard to complete and be successful in achieving their OSSD.

Key Elements

Involves the earning of credits both in-school or at the work place to meet individual needs;

  • Requires pre-placement orientation prior to work experience;
  • Integrates classroom and workplace learning;
  • Involves reflective learning;
  • Involves student assessment;
  • Requires the completion of the safety orientation prior to work experience commencing;
  • Enhances what is taught in school by extending student learning beyond the regular classroom;
  • Learning skills will be assessed and reported separately by the supervisor and monitoring teacher.

In-Class Responsibilities

  • Individuals must follow​ SWMSS policies as outlined in the student agenda.
