Notes on Translation
The electronic translation service on the York Region District School Board's website is hosted by Google Translate. The quality of the translation will vary in some of the languages offered by Google. Google Translate is a free service and currently offers translation in over 50 languages, although an impressive number, this does not capture all languages or dialects. The basic translation’s goal is to capture the general intention of the original English material.
The York Region District School Board does not guarantee the quality, accuracy or completeness of any translated information. Before you act on translated information, the Board encourages you to confirm any facts that are important to you and affect any decisions you may make.
The York Region District School Board is committed to parent, family and community engagement, and it is our hope that by providing this tool on our website that we are making our information more accessible to families whose first language is not English and thereby enabling better engagement in public education.

Page Content In this program you will meet students from all over the world. The courses are designed to help you gain confidence and accuracy using English in the classroom and in your daily life. You will have opportunities to listen, speak, read and write in English, and also to learn about your new community in Canada.
"If you find yourself saying, 'But I can't speak English...' try adding the word...yet"
Jane Revell & Susan Norman
Our goal is to help students become successful English language learners who can:
- use English to communicate effectively in a variety of social settings;
- use English to achieve academically in all subject areas;
- take charge of their own learning, independently and in groups;
- select and use effective learning strategies;
- integrate confidently into mainstream courses;
- use English effectively to advocate for themselves in all areas of their lives;
- make a successful transition to their chosen postsecondary destination (work, apprenticeship, college, university);
- function effectively in a society increasingly committed to the use of information technology;
- use critical-literacy and critical-thinking skills to interpret the world around them;
- participate fully in the social, economic, political, and cultural life of their communities and of Canada.
In ESL, we believe in giving students a lot of time for practice. For every assignment that we complete in this class, there are opportunities to ensure that the teacher and the student have conferenced, there is time for process work and opportunities for peer and teacher feedback. We scaffold all assignments to build the skills for mainstream English classes.
Materials:

Students are expected to:
1. Show respect for yourself, classmates, teacher and school
2. Practice active listening
3. Be positive in class
4. Welcome all students
Remember that it is your responsibility to complete all of your work. You will find the school's policy on missed tests and assignments, plagiarism and submitting work on this website.
Attendance
Each student is responsible for missed assignments while absent. If students need to speak to the teacher to get this information, they must come during extra help hours or arrange another time - during class is not appropriate. Students who are going to be away on the day of an evaluation or the deadline for an assignment must make arrangements with the teacher prior to the day of the evaluation and may be required to provide a note from a doctor.
School Equipment
Students are expected to bring their own laptop to school everyday however if they are unable to do this there are a limited number of computers that can be borrowed from the school and students may be required to use computers in the library after school to complete classwork and assignments.
