Welcome to Kindergarten at Northern Lights Public School!

We are very happy to be welcoming your child into our Kindergarten classrooms and are looking forward to a fun and exciting year ahead!  Please take some time to read through this newsletter to find important information about the Kindergarten program at Northern Lights P.S.

What your child needs for school:
·        Indoor Running Shoes (with non-marking soles, to be left at school)  Velcro is best unless your child knows how to tie laces
·        Everything labeled with your child’s name or initials (backpacks, outdoor clothing, shoes, lunch boxes, etc.)
·        A complete change of spare clothes appropriate for the season (including socks and underwear), in a large labeled Ziploc freezer bag (in case of accidents or wet clothing in winter)
·        2 healthy snacks and a healthy lunch.  Please ensure that all items brought to school are nut-free due to life threatening allergies
·        A backpack, large enough to hold their communication folder, library book, lunch bag, and spare clothes.

Morning Arrival/ Recess / Lunch / Dismissal Routines:
MORNING: Every morning an adult will be on duty to supervise the Kindergarten students as they arrive, starting at 8:30 a.m.  Please do not leave your child unattended in the school yard or the Kindergarten play area before this time. Parents are asked to remain outside their child’s assigned Kindergarten play area – Please say goodbye to your child at the gate. The entry bell rings at 8:40 a.m. If your child takes the bus to school, a teacher on duty will pick him/her up from the bus loop and walk them to their assigned Kindergarten play area.  If your child is part of our school before/after care program, the daycare teacher will bring them to their assigned Kindergarten play area fully dressed and ready to play outside once a staff member is on duty.

LUNCH: Student lunch period is from 12:35 p.m. to 1:35pm

DISMISSAL: Our day ends at 3:15pm
BUSSED STUDENTS will be walked to the bus by a staff member on duty and supervised until they are on the bus.
BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM  STUDENTS will be picked up in their individual rooms by the daycare teachers.
STUDENTS BEING PICKED UP BY A PARENT OR CAREGIVER will be brought to their assigned Kindergarten play area outside the kindergarten classrooms. If a different adult is picking up your child on any occasion, it is preferable to let your child’s teacher know by writing a note in their Communication Folder. In the case of short notice, please notify the school office.
While waiting for your child, please remain outside the Kindergarten play area. Students will be asked to line up against the wall and will be dismissed one at a time. One at a time, the teacher will first make eye contact with you or the person picking up your child, and then will ask your child to meet you at the gate.
Thank you in advance, for your patience.

If you need to pick your child up during the school day, please report to the office and the secretary will call down to your child’s classroom to have them meet you in the office.
