Parkland P.S. is committed to supporting the Board’s literacy focus under the three Board focus areas of Quality Schools, Building Family and Community Capacity and Quality Workplaces.
The following is an outline of our school's Plan for Continuous Improvement including highlights of some of the strategies to support student achievement.
Curriculum Implementation and Student Learning
- Reading: increased numbers of students achieving at level 3 & 4 as measured by report card data, PM Benchmarks, DRA assessment, and EQAO data.
- Strategies: balanced literacy in every classroom; literacy block participation in Literacy Collaborative; colleague visits to classrooms; in-service by Literacy SERT; book study "Strategies that Work"
- Writing: increased numbers of students achieving at level 3 & 4 as measured by report card data, Ministry writing exemplars and EQAO data.
- Strategies: First Steps writing program; literacy block; developing a continuum of writing skills.
- Mathematics: increased numbers of students achieving at levels 3 & 4 as measured by report card data, diagnostic assessment; EQAO data.
- Strategies: use of math journals at every grade level; central location for math manipulatives in school; in-service at staff meetings; "Math Makes Sense" textbook series; Family Math Night
- Building Family and Community Capacity: Working with Parents as Partners: Families are engaged in supporting student learning
- Strategies: opportunities for parental involvement; borrow-a-book program; use of agendas; translation services; school web site; drop-in centre;
- Quality Schools: School Culture: increased positive interactions between staff, students, and parents.
- Strategies: consistent follow through with discipline; increased use of positive language; implementation of social skills program at all grade levels.
